CAL Express flight 4423, a DHC6 Twin Otter, departing Cayman Brac
for Grand Cayman at 1:36pm today experienced an engine problem five minutes
into the flight. This required a shut-down of the engine by the
crew. The aircraft landed safely at Gerrard Smith International Airport
at 1:56pm where it was met by the Fire and Rescue team. The Cayman
Islands Airport Authority was also notified immediately and all protocols
followed.
A total of 15 customers and 2 crew members were on board and
they exited the aircraft without incident and no one was hurt. One passenger
was however treated for hyperventilation. Cayman Airways expects that all
of the passengers will be reprotected on flights later today.
CEO Patrick Strasburger says, “Our pilots did an excellent job
managing this situation in a safe and professional manner. The Express
Maintenance team is now evaluating the situation. “
